March 2006 Concert Review... The Albert Hall, Nottingham

Walton's brilliant Johannesburg Festival Overture was the prelude to two late romantic masterpieces in Nottingham Symphony Orchestra's Saturday concert.

David Greed was soloist in Elgar's Violin Concerto. The chosen speeds of this warmly expressive performance really allowed the music to breathe. Especially memorable were the tranquillity of the slow movement and the deep meditation of the Finale's acompanied cadenza.

Rachmaninov's 3rd Symphony is a volatile work and conductor Derek Williams was responsive to its rapid changes of mood. Both as an ensemble and as soloists the orchestra played impressively, nowhere more so than in the nostalgic theme of the first movement.
