'The invitation was 'Come Fly With Us!' - and people grabbed the chance in large numbers, lured not only by the vocal charms of Rebecca Knight and Karen England, The Opera Babes, but by the dynamic and innovative programme. People sometimes complain that classical concerts are too static and non-visual. Not this one. As well as the NSO and NFO chorus on top form, and conductors Derek Williams and Andrew Nicklin performing with their usual panache, there was a huge variety, ranging from Disney musicals to grand opera. The talent of the children from Stage Coach Beeston also gave the audience much to cheer about, with compere Simon Theobold an informative guide. Light effects, atmospheric slides and film sequences all helped to draw the audience into the music's diverse worlds - such as the glittering second act of Die Fledermaus, Wagner's Ride of the Valkyries, and music from E.T. and 633 Squadron. Providing an oasis of calm was Vaughan Williams' The Lark Ascending whose soloist Derek Williams proved he was equally adept with violin and baton.' |
