Distinguished organist Jane Watts joined Nottingham Symphony Orchestra in a weekend concert celebrating 20 years of the Nottinghamshire Historic Churches Trust.

The first piece had medieval links; several others had religious associations. The second half was devoted to Saint-Saens Symphony No.3, which draws on the "Dies irae" plainchant motif.

The symphony has a promenant organ part. Jane Watts had an excellent rapport with conductor Derek Williams. She used a blend of romantic colours in Cesar Franck's Choral No.3 in A minor, for organ solo, and Alexandre Guilmant's Symphonie I. The evening opened with the majestic tread of Wagner's Prelude to The Mastersingers of Nuremberg. Nimble woodwind gave zest to the lighter episodes.

Alex Hodgson led the string ensemble in a sensitive account of the Adagio from Samuel Barber's String Quartet, later re-used by its composer for a sacred chorus.
